Pictures of Morning in Havana

Old Havana viewed from the roof of the Ambos Mundos Hotel where Kate stayed after moving out of the brothel.

Jose Marti Memorial. Visited by Kate late one night.

Che’s likeness on a building viewed from the Marti Memorial. I understand why this is on one of Fidel’s buildings, but why people would go around with this murderer on their tee shirt escapes me.

Close-up of Che’s likeness.

A local at the Marti Memorial. “Havana is very dangerous; there are police everywhere.”

Valparaiso, Chile. The ancient port city where Blanco and Mendoza tracked down General Arreo

From its very top, half a mile above sea level, down to the edge of the small town center, the hillside was crammed with shacks set on posts or concrete blocks, defying gravity as they clung to the hillside like match boxes glued haphazardly to the side of a pyramid. The dwellings were served by a confusing web of narrow streets, stairways, and paths, many dead-ending abruptly just around a steep downhill turn.

In Cementario Colon. These are marble plaques left to Amelia, the subject of a miracle, who Cubans ask for divine assistance with various problems. http://www.cubanet.org/CNews/y98/feb98/12e2.htm

The close-up is one thanking her for helping someone leave Cuba.

Typical shot in old Havana. The results of fifty years of neglect.

A ration store in Havana. Off-limits for tourists who might be unsettled by the empty shelves and lackluster service.

School kids in red neckerchiefs learning to be patriotic.

A shot of Hong Kong from Kowloon. The inspiration for what Havana could look like post Fidel.

Shrimp boats decked out for the annual shrimp festival, Delcambre, Louisiana. Kate was a regular here as a child.

The blessing of the fleet.

Rigging.

The Florida Hotel. Kate fell in love with it and wanted to buy it.
